On Saturday September 28th we will be holding a Strategy event, AGM and a social – and everyone involved with the 1st is invited to attend one, two or all three of these events, as they wish!
The Strategy event will run from 1pm to 5pm and is intended to be a chance for everyone to get together to explore group-wide challenges and aspirations. We’ll be looking at our digital, volunteering, leader training and programme ambitions, but we’re also keen to hear about any ideas and ambitions you want to discuss too. Please feel free to email Mike Wilson, GSL, with ideas: email@example.com.
We’ll then run a short AGM between 5.30pm and 6pm. As trustees, the Exec is required legally to share information about our finances and governance with all Leaders, Members, Parents and others who make up the Group Scout Council. We’ll be sending out a Trustee Report and a Finance Report separately. We will also be electing and re-electing Committee Members.
We are still looking for a new chair to replace Dave Kesby, who will be stepping down at the AGM. If you are interested in finding out more about this incredibly rewarding role, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. As Dave says, “It’s not the most important role in Scouting, but it is one that can make a real difference. What difference do you want to make?” A complete organisational chart of 1st Winchester Scout Group is available here
Finally, we’ll have the social, from 6pm to 8pm – a chance to relax and have a chat.
Everything the 1st Winchester Group does depends on our volunteers. Many of you already do a lot to help, but we are still looking for some more new volunteers. In particular, we are looking for Beaver leaders on Monday evenings (Normans), Cubs leaders on Tuesdays; and Scouts on Thursday evenings (Greeks). We are also still looking for a new Assistant Group Scout Leader, for some new Executive Committee members and an Active Support Unit lead. We also always need Occasional Helpers at beavers, cubs and scouts: a little bit of help can go a very long way!
To find out more about any of these opportunities, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
We are delighted to announce that Mike Wilson is our new Group Scout Leader (GSL)! Mike is a very experienced Scout leader who has been in charge of the Greeks (Thursday evening scouts) for many years. Mark Weston-Smith has now taken over as the new leader of the Greeks, but that means we need another new leader to help on Thursday evenings. If you’d like to help, or to find out a bit more about what would be involved, please contact Dave Kesby, Mike or Mark.
We’re also very pleased to say that Gill Bowyer is now our Group Admin Assistant, a new role created to assist the GSL and to take control of important administrative tasks including DBS processing. But we are also still looking for a new Assistant GSL to help both Mike and Gill with their duties. Again, if you’re interested, please do get in touch.
On Saturday 30th September 1st Winchester Scouts travelled to the Boaz Project Hampshire to help with the Billy Boaz Family Fun Day. We helped to set up stalls and to serve refreshments. We were also asked to run an outdoor garden games section, which included chess, archery and a more unusual game called Cub.
It was great fun and lovely to see all the participants taking part in the sponsored walk and run. We were all given a medal at the end of the day as a thank-you for our help.
1st Winchester Scout AGM is on the 14th July at 8pm at 1st Place. It will be a quick an minimalist AGM which will cover only the key requirements under the governance process of the Scout Association. However, it makes it no less important for parents and leaders to pay attention to our reports and ensure that we in the Executive Committee are doing our job to help run the Group successfully. The following documents will be presented for agreement at the AGM. Questions can be raised before or during the AGM.
An innovative project by 1st Winchester won 3rd place in the national Scouting for All awards last weekend at Warwick University. See the video below to see what the Scouting Plus project is all about.
We have now fitted a folding partition wall inside 1st Place that will allow flexible use for the hall space – different activities running simultaneously. Half the cost was the donation we received from the Mayor’s Charity in 2015, the other half, of course, was down to donations and fundraising that our parents have all been involved in.
Before it can be properly used we need to fill in the gap between it and the ceiling. This will happen during early Autumn Term. Please look out for dates when work takes place at 1st Place.
Thanks to everyone for helping us to develop the building and make it a safe and adventurous place to do Scouting in.
This year’s major Fundraiser for 1st Winchester Scout Group is on 21st May with our annual mammoth Car Parking effort in support of Sparsholt College Countryside Day. It’s a vital day for us, so please get the date in your diaries. If you plan ahead you can get a family ticket to enter the Countryside Day for FREE whilst parents take it in turns to help out. We need about 20 adults in the morning and the same in the afternoon. We also need people to help during a few evenings before the day and we are looking for a person to help Tristan directly in supporting his efforts to coordinate activities. Could you do this? If so, put your name and time in our doodle scheduler by following this link
